Korean Studies Center Committee Resolution

The Center for Korean Studies at Kyushu University was established as an internal organization in late 1999. In April 2002, it was reorganized as an “Intramural Joint Education and Research Facility” in accordance with MEXT Ordinance No. 28.

The official English name of the Center is the Research Center for Korean Studies. It is a research institution dedicated to Korean Studies—an interdisciplinary field that examines the Korean language, culture, history, and society. This field encompasses not only the governments of North and South Korea, but also diaspora communities originating from the Korean Peninsula, such as the Zainichi Koreans and the Koryo-saram.

The year 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the Center’s establishment, providing an important opportunity to reaffirm its mission and role for the next quarter century, looking ahead to 2050. Accordingly, in line with Article 2, Appendix 1 of the Regulations for the Kyushu University Joint Research and Education Center, the Center’s organizational roles are defined as follows:1.

2.

[Promotion of Korean Studies Research]

The Center is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing joint research initiatives aimed at advancing Korean Studies as an interdisciplinary field, in collaboration with researchers, universities, and research institutions both domestically and internationally.

[Contribution to the Advancement of Comprehensive Knowledge, Human Sciences, and Culture]

By promoting Korean Studies as an interdisciplinary field, the Center aims to contribute to the development of comprehensive knowledge that addresses rapidly changing human societies and pressing global challenges, thereby advancing the fields of human sciences and culture.

[Dissemination of Research Results to Society]

The Center actively shares the outcomes of its Korean Studies research with society through various channels, including its annual report, official website, public research symposia, and lectures open to the general public.
